Health and Safety
Why not just ban engineered stone?
A ban on engineered stone would not solve the issue of silicosis. Even if engineered stone is banned, the presence of silica in all substitute materials (except wood and laminates) and in industries such as tunnelling, and construction means stone workers will continue to face the risk of silicosis. There is no logic in banning one product that must be handled in exactly the same manner as all similar products, particularly with new low-silica engineered stone products containing less silica than some natural stone. The key to protecting fabricators is the rigorous application of safe handling practices.
What else is Caesarstone doing to help?
Caesarstone has consistently taken action to promote a safe engineered stone industry. These efforts have included clear product handling and safety guidelines, warnings on each of our products sold and ongoing education and training programs for fabricators, including the Master of Stone® website. Caesarstone is also actively developing products that contain a lower percentage of silica. Caesarstone has engaged extensively with governments, work safety bodies and organizations to help foster better understanding of the issues related to silicosis and to promote safer working conditions.
When a fabricator makes modifications onsite, is this dangerous to the consumer?
Caesarstone always recommends that fabrication of our products is performed in a controlled environment, such as a factory or workshop. When an installer decides that minor adjustments are necessary onsite, they must follow proper safety procedures, such as wet-cutting to eliminate dust.
Is this process safe for fabricators?
The risks of contracting silicosis from prolonged exposure to silica dust is well documented and understood. However, all silica-containing materials, including engineered stone, can be handled safely if proper equipment is used and proper procedures are followed. These include masks, ventilation, air monitoring and ‘wet cutting’, where water is used to suppress dust. Many countries have clear standards in place for the safe handling of stone products. These standards are enforced by work safety bodies in each territory.
Who fabricates engineered stone?
Caesarstone sells its products in slab form to independent fabricators, who cut and shape it to size for kitchen retailers, cabinet makers and builders. It is this process that releases silica dust, which can create risks for workers if it is not handled using proper safety equipment and procedures.
Are Casarstone surfaces safe in my home?
Yes, completely. In its solid form – such as in installed countertops – it is considered by experts to be perfectly safe. There is no risk to those choosing to have a Caesarstone countertop or surface in their home.
All engineered stone – and most stone materials such as slate, granite, sandstone, concrete, marble, and porcelain – contains some level of silica.
Material | Percentage of silica |
Marble and limestone | 2% |
Concrete | 20-40% |
Slate | 25-40% |
Granite | 20-45% |
Porcelain | ~40% |
Natural sandstone (found in tunnelling, mining, construction) | 70-95% |
Engineered stone | Up to 97% |
Silica is only dangerous when released as dust through the fabrication of the stone – cutting, drilling, grinding, or polishing. In this process, workers exposed to silica dust through poor safety practices can develop serious health issues, including the lung disease silicosis.
Protect
Do quartz & mineral surfaces require sealing?
Our quartz & mineral surfaces are highly resistant to just about anything, including cracks, scratches, and stains because they are non-porous. This also eliminates the need for sealing or polishing and reduces bacterial growth potential. You never need to apply a sealer to any Caesarstone surface.
Is caring for Caesarstone surfaces really that easy?
Caesarstone surfaces are durable and nonporous, making them virtually maintenance-free.
Our carefree maintenance and everlasting benefits in performance and appearance give you peace of mind, knowing your surface is completely safe and durable.
How to care for dark surfaces?
Dark surfaces may need more daily maintenance since they are more prone to showing signs of everyday use than light surfaces. All dark surfaces tend to be more sensitive to noticeable scratch marks and should be protected from sharp objects. A patina may be more visible on dark models, so wipe away liquid spills and don’t let them dry out on the surface. The use of cream-textured cleaning products is not recommended on dark surfaces. Check first on an inconspicuous area.
Can I cut directly on the surface?
Always use a cutting board, although Caesarstone surfaces are scratch resistant.
Are Caesarstone surfaces scratch-proof?
Caesarstone surfaces are scratch resistant. However, avoid using sharp objects, such as knives or screwdrivers, directly on the surface. Instead, always use a cutting board, especially on dark surfaces, which tend to be more prone to show scratch marks.
How can I prevent patina?
Do not allow liquids to dry out or remain on your surface for a long time. Always wipe away wet spills to prevent limescale from forming. This is particularly important on dark surfaces, where a patina may be more visible.
What products to avoid to protect Caesarstone surfaces?
- Avoid strong chemicals and solvents, and strong acids or alkalis, oxidizers or similar materials, regardless of pH.
- Avoid harsh cleaning products such as: oven/grill cleaners, dishwasher detergent, floor strippers, oil soaps, paint removers/strippers, etc. or any products containing trichloroethane or methylene chloride
- Avoid products containing oils as they may leave a residue. All products should be rinsed off thoroughly
- If the surface comes into contact with any products that might damage it, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
Check each cleaning product first on an inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t damage the surface.
Can I stand on my worktop?
Always refrain from placing excessive weight on your worktop. Excessive weight can also have an impact on the underlying cabinet structure.
Clean
How do I remove stubborn stains?
Gently rub the area using a soft cloth or paper towel with an approved cleaner. Clean a larger size than the stain itself in a circular motion. Rinse with water, and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Repeat the process if the stain is still visible.
How do I clean my surface regularly?
A splash of warm water and soap or a mild detergent for everyday routine cleaning will do. Plant oil-based soaps should be avoided. Our surfaces are extremely strong, nonporous, and stain-resistant, so wipe with a soft cloth or dip in warm soapy water, then rinse with water and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel.
For tougher blemishes, apply a non-abrasive cleaner or a mild degreaser on a damp cloth and wipe the surface. Rinse with warm water to wash away the residue and dry with a paper towel; your surface is as good as new! Doing a deep cleaning once a month is recommended to prevent patina buildup.
It’s always good to wipe away wet spills immediately, to prevent a patina from building up.
Finishes other than Polished may need more daily maintenance due to their unique patterns and finishes.
How to remove dried spills?
First, reanimate the spill with water for several minutes to remove adhered material. Then, follow our recommended cleaning methods and clean the surface with a damp cloth to remove any leftover marks and any residual dirt. Do not use any abrasive pads to clean tougher dirt, as they can damage the finish and sheen of your surface.
How to remove metal and rust marks?
Particular use is suitable ONLY for spot cleaning, and because of the abrasive nature of this cleaner, use Bar Keepers Friend Power ONLY as follows: Place a small amount on a damp cloth and, using very light pressure wipe the area where the marks are, in a circular motion, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Do not use a scouring pad.
How to remove patina?
Occasionally, the surface should be cleaned with an approved cleaner and thoroughly dried. However, due to Caesarstone's surfaces' high density and non-porous qualities, a regular cleaning with a damp cloth and soap is all you need to keep your surface looking great. We recommend a thorough cleaning of your Caesarstone surface regularly (because of the patina that will develop on the surface from day-to-day use) to keep the surface as beautiful as the day it was installed.
Can you clean surfaces with vinegar?
If you want environmentally safe cleaners on your surface, use a combination of 50/50 vinegar and water. Rinse and dry the surface thoroughly afterwards.
Are Caesarstone surfaces hygienic?
Your surface is engineered to be highly nonporous, and as such, it is non-absorbent, does not host bacteria, mould, or mildew, and remains safe and fresh for ultimate cleanliness.
Cleaning for Honed, Concrete and Rough Finishes
Please note that Honed, Concrete and Rough finishes require more cleaning than our Polished finishes. Since there is more exposed surface area with these finishes, metal marks, fingerprints, and other signs of daily living will show. Most of these marks can be removed with little effort and non-abrasive cleaning products
Which cleaning products are good for quartz & mineral?
Use your regular cleaning products and check the product first by applying it to an inconspicuous area on the surface. It’s best to avoid using the same cloth you use for washing dishes, as it may transfer oils and other contaminants to your surface.
Cleaning products that should not be used include oven grill cleaners, floor strippers, toilet bowl cleaners, oil soaps, tarnish removers, furniture cleaners, drain products, wipes and cleaners specific to granite, marble and other natural stones, etc. Should your surface accidentally be exposed to any potentially damaging products, rinse immediately with water to neutralize the effect.

What is a honed vs. polished surface?
Stone finishes give the surface its final look in terms of tactility (feel in touch), light reflection, and overall coming together of colour and pattern. The slab's depth of grounding determines what it undergoes in its final stages. Honed is a matted sheen with a flat, smoother texture, while polished gives off a highly reflective, bright shine.

What is Quartz?
Quartz surfaces are man-made engineered stones, combining up to 90% raw quartz crystals with numerous resin binders and dashes of pigment dyes, all pressed together using innovative patented technology that produces a range of incredibly durable and superbly beautiful quartz surfaces.
Expanding on the patented 1970s Breton system, Caesarstone pioneered the market segment of quartz surfaces, worldwide, proven to be highly improved alternatives to natural stone, such as marble and granite.
Quartz mineral is as common as sand, yet tougher than steel, with a hardness of 7 compared with the 10 of a diamond (Mohs scale). Resistant to stains, scratches and cracks, quartz is impervious to heat and cold and to common household chemicals. Quartz surfaces combine form and function, allowing for the most diverse, durable, and practical applications. Our surfaces retain the cool, tactile qualities of natural stone, while offering design freedom with almost unlimited application possibilities in hygienic, durable, and beautiful surfaces.
What is Caesarstone made of?
Caesarstone is the pioneering manufacturer of premium surfaces, offering the largest variety of designs for over three decades. Our unique mixture of ground quartz aggregates, resins, and pigment creates surfaces that last a lifetime.
